Sarah...

Sarah is very model looking. She is very tall, very thin, and has unique features. I loved her enthusiasm and willing to work attitude. She was a pleasure to shoot and an enjoyable person to have around.

I only shot two different beauty type looks with Sarah, but I am looking forward to collaborating more with her in the future. The first look we did was very clean and natural, and the second look was more creative and bright.

I enjoyed both looks, but I can't wait to have Sarah let her personality loose in a more fashion type of shoot. I am not done shooting with this girl. I definitely recommend her to anyone that is thinking about working with her!

Unsuccessful? Never!

Every shoot that I do, I learn more and more. I am constantly improving, and I think that I am improving extremely quickly. I am at the point in my photographic journey where I have the advantage of becoming more selective with whom I shoot. I am able to work with agency signed models as well as amateur models of my choosing, that are usually terrific. I can honestly say that I have never had an unsuccessful shoot. I am always upbeat and positive about the results that I get. I am very consistent in my output and level of quality in my work so I know that I will shoot the best possible images given the situation.

Sometimes this situation is not ideal. Sometimes the talent is not as talented as you would have hoped, or they just don't have the right look that you need. When this happens, I try to counteract it as much as possible. There is never a perfect situation so knowing how to adapt puts you at an advantage. There was a shoot recently where I did not receive even one useable image for my portfolio. This shoot was a trade shoot, meaning that I am trading my time for the images that we receive and the model and other talent are trading their time for the images that we create. This shoot is the only shoot that I have done, for trade, where I felt the images did not benefit me and were not up to par with others in my portfolio. This situation is not ideal and it bothered me a lot. If I am trading my time shooting, hours retouching, and general skill and knowledge for nothing then that is really disheartening. You are always risking this when doing trade shoots, which is why I am usually very selective with who I work with. I tried to love the images, I tried to adapt them in photoshop to render them useful, but nothing worked.

I really felt badly that there weren't any useable images, so I contacted the individual about a reshoot. I thought that I had some great ideas and gave her some tips on what we might be able to do to get some really nice shots that benefited both of us, tips that involved no escorts and other distractions. I don't know if I offended her by saying that I thought it would be best that there was no escort. At the first shoot, she did bring her boyfriend, and anyone that knows me knows that I do NOT like boyfriends/husbands/girlfriends etc. to be at shoots, period. I did make an exception because she was traveling such a long way to shoot with me. Her boyfriend was not overly distracting at all, but I thought that at a reshoot we should eliminate any possible distraction.

To me, that is only a minor detail to a successful shoot.

The response that I got back, is what floored me. I basically received a Thanks, but no thanks kind of response and that was it! I was so taken aback that I didn't even know how to respond. In those situations, I usually get at least a reason or a more lengthy response. This individual is just starting out, and has a lot to learn modeling wise. I thought that I could help her along by providing insight and tips, but I guess she does not feel that my work benefits her, which is a bit offensive. I know that not everyone will always like my work but we can always hope.

I am not heartbroken because I am afforded the opportunities to work with actual industry professionals where I will be guaranteed great images for my portfolio, but this story will always be in the back of my mind. I work with amateur models because I think that everyone deserves to have high quality images. If I have the time, I will shoot with anyone that I think has a great look. I see now that I definitely need to be more selective with people that I choose to work with.

Even with shoots like this where I received nothing, physically, for my efforts, I did learn something about myself, about working with models, and about photography in general...so nothing is a lost cause!

Off to bigger and better things...

Caitlin...

The only word that I can think of when I think of Caitlin, is FABULOUS! Haha, inside shoot joke. This girl is amazing! She is talented, intelligent, creative, and not to mention drop dead gorgeous! She looks EXACTLY like Shannyn Sossamon, but with a Pin-Up flair. She is, naturally, such a beautiful woman. Even though she looks like a model and can pose like a model, she is more than that. Caitlin is full of energy and bursting with ideas! Definitely in my Top 5 when it comes to my most favorite people that I have ever shot! Plus the images that we created are some of my best images to date!

Caitlin is one of those rare finds that you don't ever want to let go of. I am overjoyed that I had the opportunity to work with her and I hope that we collaborate a lot more in the future!

Thanks so much, Caitlin!

Gypsy Love Fashions/Ashlynn...

I contacted a Clothing Designer, Gypsy Love Fashions, about a possible shoot together. We set this shoot up a couple times but it didn't go through because of cancellations or whatnot. We finally set a good date and booked a reliable model, Ashlynn. At the last minute the makeup artist and hair stylist cancelled. Instead of canceling the shoot I got on You Tube, yeah I know, and started researching pin-up looks.

At the shoot I did the hair and makeup to the first look which was a 50's type of pin-up dress. It took me awhile to get something that kinda resembled pin-up but I had never done hair before!! The look was very cute and Ashlynn played the role perfectly. At one point she said "I wish we had a pie" and I responded "Actually, I do". Raul had bought an "apple" pie a couple days before and it turned out to be cherry so he wouldn't eat it, so it became our prop!

Gypsy actually did the makeup and hair for the second and third look, so all in all we came together and produced something that worked for us. The shoot was really fun, Ashlynn was a doll, and Gypsy was awesome to work with!

Haley...

Haley is a gorgeous girl that I contacted from Model Mayhem. She is very new to modeling but you can't really tell. She is very relaxed and natural in front of the camera. I new from her very first modeling images that she would be amazing, I was right! I am sure that she will become very popular on Model Mayhem. She also has a daughter that is around the same age as my Lili, so that commonality gave us something to chat about.

I did the makeup for this shoot. We had inspiration photos to go by and I learned that I am fairly good at replicating looks just from referencing another image. I think I did a great job on the makeup and Haley's stunning good looks helped a lot as well.

Haley is as sweet as she is beautful! I can't wait to work with her again and maybe photograph her beautiful daughter, Eden, as well!!

Anna...

Anna is a very understanding person with a heart of gold. Our shoot ended very abruptly because of certain circumstances and she was a trooper about the whole situation. She even texted me later to make sure everything was alright. She is a genuinely caring and lovely person to be around.

She shoots a lot of sexy images and I am not the person to come to when you want to do a sexy shoot but she encouraged me to at least try something different. I am glad that I broke out of my comfort zone, but it wasn't easy. I give props to people that shoot sexy shots and glamour well! You would think that it is just shooting chicks in lingerie but it is a lot more than that!

I always thought it would be fairly simple, but for someone like me that enjoys shooting beauty and portraits, it was very nerve wreaking and stressful. I learned at this shoot that I am very anal about my images. I like to compose a great shot and I don't let go. I think that Anna taught me that I should relax more and enjoy shooting whatever that I may be shooting even if I am not familiar with it.

I did surprise myself and we got a few really nice images! I also did the hair and makeup for this shoot.

Bisi Beauty Shoot...

I shot with Bisi, a very talented Makeup Artist, once before and she did such a wonderful job that I wanted to set up more shoots with her. She came to me with an idea of doing a beauty shoot with a few models and doing one look each on them.

She contacted models and in the end Nealean and Angela showed up for the shoot! These two girls are very different yet very beautiful and talented models. Nealean is just gorgeous. She photographs beautifully, probably the most naturally photogenic person that I have ever worked with. She takes direction incredibly well and the photographs of her needed very little retouching. She was willing to try different things, which is awesome. We ended up doing a very beautiful orange look with Nealean.

Angela is a very professional and awesome person. We talked non-stop throughout the shoot. She has such a warm and inviting personality. She is one of those people that you talk to and you feel like you have known them for years, I like that! We ended up doing two looks on Angela...a dark black look and a brown feather eyelash look.

We had a few mishaps that caused us to make some last minute decisions about looks and what not, but overall I was very pleased with the outcome and I think that everyone got some great images for their portfolios! I would work with any of these ladies again!

Victoria Bell/Ophelia Darkly...

This model is not only an alternative model but she also has fashion model stats and look! Victoria Bell is the name she goes by on her fashion profile on Model Mayhem, and Ophelia Darkly is the name she goes by on her more alternative profile.

I wanted to shoot this model for a long time but our schedules never worked out. For this shoot we had planned to do two different looks. We did a more natural look with her that turned out with a slight Victorian feel, and then we did a more colorful look that she had planned and put together.

Unlike most models that I shoot, she came with a Makeup Artist! Both girls were so fun and so wonderful to work with, I really hope that we all get to shoot together again some time! She also added a new station to my Pandora, Marilyn Manson Radio...it actually was awesome shoot music!

Velouria Adore...

"Velouria Adore" as she is called on Model Mayhem is one of the sweetest girls that I have ever worked with. You can tell that she enjoys modeling. She is a newer model but she takes direction well and is very easy to work with. She has a very unique look and is an accomplished Hair Stylist!

Velouria did her own makeup for the shoot and it is pretty much her own signature style. I have yet to find someone that did not like the makeup that she did for the shoot. She came to the shoot with full ideas prepared complete with wardrobe and props in hand, I love that! I would shoot her again in a heartbeat.

She was the first "alternative" model that I had the pleasure to shoot. I couldn't have asked for a better model for the shoot that we did.

Jenny...

Jenny is a very outgoing and beautiful girl. She has a personality that is hard to come by. She is just one of those people that are hard to explain, but you adore them. She was very relaxed which is hard to come by when working with girls from Model Mayhem. She is not a new model and has vast experience which is where I lend the relaxed attitude to.

Even though she has an amazing sense of humor and she likes to goof around, she is very professional. She would be cracking jokes one minute and striking a serious pose the next. She was a joy to work with!

She has this amazing model quality about her. I hope to work with her in the near future, we created some fantastic images together.

I did her makeup for this shoot and I think that it turned out very well.

Jeff...

Jeff contacted me from ModelMayhem and I decided to shoot with him. He had a lot of really great work in his portfolio which made me a little nervous. Shooting a male was really different. I felt like a fish out of water. I was very nervous, and awkward. I am not sure if I will be shooting anymore guys any time soon, but shooting with Jeff was definitely a great experience. He knows how to pose and has many expressions which is always nice. All I was hoping for was to get him a couple images that he actually liked. I think I succeeded but I still have a few more to edit.

I tried to use harsher lighting and not try to shoot him how I shoot the women that I work with. I wanted to add a bit more of a manly element to the shoot, but he also wanted some more commercial looking images as well. He was very understanding in the fact that I don't usually shoot men, but he still wanted to shoot with me anyway.

Thanks Jeff!

Collaborations...

I am definitely going to start working on more collaborations. A couple weeks ago I did a shoot with a great model, Lauren, and she proposed that we shoot with her friend that has a jewelry line. After that was set up, she contacted a makeup artist and I contacted a hair stylist. We had such a great time and everyone was so incredibly talented!

The jewelry designer was Katie of www.dollybirddesign.com. Her pieces are handcrafted, and so incredibly uniques and gorgeous!

I just loved working with all of these ladies. I am hoping that we all collaborate again in the future! Here are a few shots we got.

Karina...

I scheduled a last minute photoshoot with a girl from Model Mayhem. I wasn't sure how it was going to be as the girl didn't have very many photos in her online portfolio.

When she showed up at my place with no makeup on, I was floored. She had such an incredible natural beauty. Not only was she beautiful, she was talkative, funny, and nice.

It was probably one of the most fun photoshoots that I have had in a long time. She was a little nervous at first but that is expected for new models, she quickly loosened up and was a natural at posing.I did her makeup for the shoot , and she did her hair. It was a blast working with her, and I hope to work with her again real soon!

Logo...

I am trying out new logos. I have always known that I wanted a simple logo and a simple yet beautiful business card. I want something that says something about me but is also professional.

I think this design fits me well! I added a bit of hot pink in there just for a little flare of personality but overall, I shoot clean and professional work so I wanted my card to be a very clean, simple, yet modern design.

Here is what I have so far:

Perfection, what I thought I wanted...

It's funny how things happen in your life that finally make you go "Aha!!". I had that moment today. I was looking through the work of a young photographer and I kept thinking to myself, "wow..,what creativity! man, he has some talent." Well, I am sure he does have talent, but one thing he has that I lack is the power to make images that he carefully creates and thinks through, images that say something about him and his vision.

I constantly feel like I am striving to make photographs that other people will love, or that other people will think are amazing. I have been going about this all wrong. I think that the minute that I finally let go and try something different for a change, is going to be the day that my photography starts blowing ME away.

I want to take pride in the work that I do, but I also want to have fun doing it. The last few shoots have felt like a chore. I feel like I need to make everything perfect for the perfect portfolio. Well the truth is that I have not been doing this that long! I need to experiment and grow, I shouldn't be limiting myself to what I think I am good at right this minute because I have only had around a dozen photoshoots.

This experimenting that I want to do will cost me though. I need more lights. I have decided to save up to get speedlights so that I can further my creativity by not being limited to a studio setting with cords, I will not be tied down. The, even modest priced, speedlights are about $200 per light then you need adapters, modifiers, and stands...but I will cross that bridge when I get there.

I need to be able to know what it feels like to just grab a person and run to any location that inspires me and start shooting something that feels right. I need the experimentation, I need the freedom, I need to be able to be creative again, and most of all I need to know what it feels like to make mistakes so that I can learn as much as possible. I just need right now. I have been so busy giving, giving all of myself...well more of myself than there is. I have been spreading myself too thin and trying to force a perfect portfolio from my camera without any imagination or creativity!

I will continue to shoot beauty work, I will shoot portraits, but I also want to shoot ideas and feelings, moods, and just anything that makes ME feel good. I need to feel good about the choice I am making to start a career in photography. I need to not worry so much about getting clients, being professional, doing things perfectly...because if I let myself go and I feel good about what I am shooting then the rest will take care of itself.

At least...that is what I hope happens!!

Alanah...

So, the shoot went well. Alanah was an awesome girl. She is very new to modeling so I kept it simple and only worked on getting her a great portrait for her portfolio. I think the results are great for her being so new to modeling. She was great to work with and hopefully we will shoot together again sometime.

I did the makeup myself. I kept it very natural with a bronze look. She has a great tan and I had a background paper that matched her coloring. I loved how everything was so cohesive. I am a bit of a perfectionist and sometimes I feel that interrupts the artistic flow because I am so wrapped up in all the little details. That is one thing I am going to try and work on, to relax and have fun with shoots.

Scheduling...

I am no longer working during the week now due to scheduling differences. I need to stay home and be with my daughter at this time. I will be working my regular job on the weekends. The good thing about this is that I will have some time to shoot! Thank goodness. I was beginning to think I would never have another photoshoot ever again. Hah.

Anyway...tomorrow I am supposed to work with a very beautiful girl. We are set to do some natural type beauty shots. The only thing is that I do not have a makeup artist scheduled because the shoot was scheduled last minute. I am going to be doing the makeup. I think I have decided to go with a very natural golden summer type of look. I am very nervous but hopefully everything will turn out ok.

I am going to keep everything very natural and easy because I am no makeup artist, that's for sure. Moisturized skin, golden eyes, bronzed cheeks, a really light but shiny lip, natural looking false lashes if we need them, and a shimmery highlighter. I should probably pick up some golden or nude nail polish too.

Wish me luck!!!

What I love to shoot...

Beauty...
I have only had one shoot in my life that would even be, close to being, considered a Beauty shoot. This shoot was done with my very favorite model and close friend, Karen. She is a gorgeous girl and has great skin and facial features. I new she would be perfect to start on, and it helps that she actually believes in me and constantly supports my photography...she is a doll. I actually met her at one of my first photoshoots, and suprisingly it was one of her first shoots also. We produced some great images, and have been friends ever since.
So now that I have one beauty shoot under my belt, I want to do more! I feel like this could really be the genre that I was made for. I LOVE shooting people, more than that, I love shooting faces. That was always why I opted to shoot portraits, but plain portraits are not enough for me, I want the hustle and bustle of the exciting fashion shoots. I know a lot about skincare, makeup, and hair. Again this may be my perfect fit, all I need is some agency type models, great artists, and PRACTICE.
We also had a makeup artist on this shoot, that did a wonderful job. This was my favorite photoshoot, by far. Here are a couple more of the edited images that I got from this shoot:
Again, this was my FIRST attempt at a beauty shoot, so don't be too harsh on me.
Thanks for reading!

Behind the Scenes...

I know that being a photographer isn't going to be an easy thing to accomplish, but it is my greatest passion and what kind of shining example would I be if I didn't follow it?? I don't think I would be much of an example at all.

I want my daughter to know that she CAN do anything in the world that she wants to, within reason. I want to be able to tell her all about my life and share with her my experiences that finally led me to having the most amazing career.

I want to be able to support her, and just be happy in my life. Having my dream career will do that for me. Maybe I am crazy but at least I have goals and set out to achieve them. So many people settle for whatever they have, rather than reaching out of their comfort zones to get what they REALLY deserve.

So with that, I dedicate this blog and all my hard work to my little one. Liliana Alyse Ortiz, you are my little shining star, you are my girl, you are my whole world!

*did I mention that I am also available to take children's photos? :)

my 1st blog post...

{please read my about me section!}

Through this blogging journey, I am going to go from wishing to actually doing. I am going to turn my dreams into a reality. I am tired of sitting by the sidelines, waiting for someone to call me into the game. I am going to strap on my big girl pants and charge in. Taking the initiative is going to be the first step. I am scared to death, but I need to do this now! No one is going to push me to do this, I have to push myself. I have realized my goals, and dreams and there is no going back. This is what I want, and I will settle for nothing less. Obviously, I have more to think about and more to do than just photography, but I need to take the first steps.

I have certain steps and goals that I need to complete before any of this can be started. Blogging about everything is just going to be a way to hold me accountable, keep me motivated, and inspired to achieve these goals.

___________________________________________________________________
Bare Minimum (starter) Goals:

-Begin to sketch out ideas for shoots so that the end product is portfolio worthy.
-Hold at least 2 photo shoots a month in order to add quality images to my portfolio in the genre that I want to work in.
-Cast models that actually look and model the part.
-Cast exceptional Makeup Artists and Hairstylists for every shoot!
-Finally decide on a logo design for a business card.
-Create Business Cards and Promo Cards to pass out to get my name and work out there.
-Go to local businesses that may need photography services like jewelry shops or boutiques and hand out business cards.
-Send Promo Cards and Portfolio out to at least 3 companies, agencies, etc. per month AFTER I have 10-15 GREAT images in my portfolio.
-Network, Network, Network
